DAY ONE
-
Departure from Iquitos: Early morning pickup from your hotel or from our office in Iquitos by private vehicle or minivan (according to group size). We travel south for approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes to the riverside town of Nauta, while your guide shares fascinating insights about Iquitos, its history, and the surrounding Amazon region.

Into the Heart of the Amazon: Board a private riverboat at the port of Nauta and begin an unforgettable 3-hour journey upriver. Enjoy breathtaking Amazonian landscapes and keep watch for pink and gray river dolphins, herons, turtles, and abundant wildlife surrounded by lush tropical vegetation.

Arrival at Pacaya Samiria Reserve: We arrive at the Santo Domingo community checkpoint to complete entry formalities into the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve, one of the most biodiverse protected areas in the Amazon. Entry is officially registered and supervised by SERNANP, Peru’s National Protected Areas authority.

Rainforest & Wildlife Exploration: Continue navigating for 30 minutes to reach the community of Buenos Aires. Along the riverbanks, observe rich flora and fauna, with excellent opportunities to spot birds such as great-crowned herons, snowy egrets, and kingfishers. A guided walk through the primary rainforest allows you to connect deeply with nature and observe wildlife in its natural habitat.

Night Jungle Experience: After sunset, embark on an exciting night walk or canoe excursion, searching for nocturnal creatures such as frogs, lizards, spiders, snakes, and small mammals, while listening to the mysterious sounds of the Amazon after dark.

Overnight in the Community: We spend the night in a traditional village house in the community of Buenos Aires, sleeping in single beds equipped with mosquito nets.
DAY TWO

Amazon Sunrise & Morning Wildlife: Wake up early to experience a magical sunrise in the rainforest. As the jungle comes alive, we begin our expedition, keeping watch for monkeys and sloths moving through the treetops in their natural morning routines.

Canoe Navigation on the Pucate River: Board a canoe and navigate along the riverbanks, attentively observing movements and sounds of wildlife along the shore. We continue sailing for approximately 3 hours along the Pucate River, venturing deeper into the primary rainforest of the Pacaya Samiria area.

Traditional Piranha Fishing Experience: Enjoy an authentic artisanal fishing experience, just like the local communities. Your guide will provide instructions, assistance, and all necessary equipment to try your hand at piranha fishing. With some luck and skill, you may also catch species such as acarahuazú (Oscar fish) or fasaco (common trahira).

River Dolphins & Jungle Swim: Keep an eye out for pink river dolphins (Inia geoffrensis) and gray dolphins (tucuxis) swimming freely in their natural habitat. This is also your opportunity to swim in the Pucate River, surrounded by the pristine environment of the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve.

Virgin Rainforest Hike & Giant Trees: Continue with a guided hike through untouched rainforest, observing diverse Amazonian flora and fauna. During the walk, you will encounter the impressive Lupuna tree, one of the largest and most iconic trees in the Amazon.

Iricahua Lake Exploration: A deeper jungle trek of approximately 2 to 3 hours leads us to Lake Iricahua (Cocha Iricahua). Here, you may observe several species of monkeys, including woolly monkeys, howler monkeys, and marmosets (tocón monkeys). The lake is also home to the legendary paiche (Arapaima gigas), the largest freshwater fish in the Amazon, as well as turtles and caimans basking in the sun.

Night Caiman Expedition & Jungle Camping: After nightfall, embark on an exciting night expedition to search for black and white caimans using spotlights. We then set up camp deep in the jungle, spending the night in tents, fully immersed in the sounds and atmosphere of the Amazon rainforest.

DAY THREE

Early Morning Primate Search: Wake up very early and begin the day exploring the rainforest by canoe, searching for primates and other wildlife active during the early morning hours.

Botanical Walk & Medicinal Plants: Enjoy a guided botanical walk through the jungle, where you will learn about medicinal plants of the Amazon rainforest. Discover traditional knowledge, including how to cut and drink from a natural jungle vine known as “water rope.”

Preparation for Deep Jungle Expedition: Prepare your camping gear and get ready to venture deeper into the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve. We then continue navigating by boat for approximately 2 hours toward our next remote destination.

Deep Amazon Wildlife Expedition: Begin an expedition in search of primates and other animals in their natural habitat. As we travel deeper into the Amazon rainforest, the chances of spotting wildlife increase significantly.

Stream Exploration by Canoe: Explore narrow jungle streams by canoe, offering close encounters with the surrounding ecosystem. At the end of the stream, we disembark and explore the area on foot, observing wildlife such as the nine-banded armadillo (Carachupa), giant anteater, and rodents like the paca (Majaz) and Añuje, among other species.

Night Jungle Expedition & Camping: After sunset, take part in a nighttime expedition to search for and listen to nocturnal animals, including alligators, frogs, snakes, and other nighttime creatures. We then set up camp deep in the primary rainforest, spending the night in tents, fully immersed in the heart of the Amazon.
DAY FOUR

Early Morning Canoe & Birdwatching: Begin the day with an early morning canoe excursion that awakens your senses. This is the best time for birdwatching, as many wild birds are most active at sunrise along the riverbanks and deep within the jungle.

Jungle Hike & Lake Exploration: Continue with a guided jungle hike in search of primates, exploring nearby Amazonian lakes (cochas) where wildlife is frequently observed in its natural environment.

Community Visit & Cultural Experience: We begin our return journey, stopping at the Buenos Aires community. Here, you will have time to stretch your legs and the opportunity to support the local community by purchasing their handcrafted souvenirs, if you wish

Return to Nauta by River: Board the boat for the scenic return journey to the town of Nauta, enjoying the final views of the Amazon rainforest.

Overland Transfer to Iquitos: Upon arrival in Nauta, continue by ground transportation back to Iquitos. The tour concludes at our office, or, if you prefer, we will transfer you to your hotel or directly to Iquitos Airport.
